Newberry Students Recognized in Statewide Poster Contest

NEWBERRY, SC - Three students from the Newberry Housing Authority (NHA) community have been recognized for their artistic talents in the annual "What Home Means to Me" poster contest, held as part of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Housing America campaign.

The contest, which invites children living in affordable housing owned or administered by NAHRO member agencies to creatively express the meaning of home, is held each year in collaboration with NAHRO's local, state, regional, and national chapters.

The Carolinas Council of Housing Redevelopment & Code Officials (CCHRCO) presented awards during its annual conference in August in Myrtle Beach. The Executive Director of the Newberry Housing Authority proudly accepted the certificates on behalf of three Newberry students who each earned third place in their respective categories. Over 30 entries were submitted by NHA students, competing against entries from across the state.

The following students were recognized:

Elementary School (K-5th Grade): Ja'Liyah Grier - third place (also placed in the contest last year)
Middle School (6th-8th Grade): Zaya Coleman - third place
High School (9th-12th Grade): Kemara Tobe - third place
The awards were formally presented to the students during the Newberry Housing Authority Executive Board Meeting on August 25, 2025, by the Executive Director and Patricia Caldwell, NHA Board Chairman.

"We are incredibly proud of our students for their creativity and for representing Newberry on a statewide level," said Jessica M. Holcomb, Executive Director. "Their artwork beautifully captured the spirit of home and community, which is the heart of what we strive to foster through our housing programs."
