Housing Authority Hosts Holiday Celebration for Families and Seniors
Newberry, SC - December 22, 2025 - Residents of the Housing Authority of the City of Newberry (NHA) were showered with holiday cheer and generosity during a special senior luncheon and family dinner held on December 22, 2025. The festive celebration brought together families, seniors, volunteers, and community partners to ensure a memorable holiday season for all in attendance.
More than 100 families and seniors signed up to receive gifts through the Families Helping Families holiday assistance program, administered by the Palmetto Project in partnership with WIS-News 10. In addition, a generous anonymous donor sponsored the delicious meals for both events which were prepared by Blessed by the Best Catering.
The Newberry Housing Authority Resident Council also played a key role in the celebration. Each resident received a Newberry Housing Authority cup and calendar, provided by the Resident Council, which includes President Sharon Mathis, Vice President Donald Cook, and Secretary John Gibbs.
"This event truly reflects the power of community," said Jessica M. Holcomb, Executive Director of the Newberry Housing Authority. "Seeing our families and seniors come together to celebrate the holidays reminds us why partnerships and service are so important. We are deeply grateful to everyone who gave their time, resources, and hearts to make this day special."
The Newberry Housing Authority extends sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who served meals and supported the event, including Mr. Henry Counts and family and Mrs. Hope Graham. The success of the day would not have been possible without the tremendous assistance of Brandis Agnew and family, Sarah Eargle of First Steps of Newberry County, NHA staff, and the Newberry Thriving Families Community Action Team (a part of the Gallman Place Project).
Prior to the event, families were also given the opportunity to receive professional family portraits. These portraits were provided by NHA's onsite therapist, Angie Hypes of Innovation Counseling Services, adding an extra touch of joy and lasting memories for participating families.
The Families Helping Families program begins each August, when families apply for holiday assistance through local social service agencies that screen for eligibility. The Newberry Housing Authority is always seeking volunteers and community engagement opportunities to further support residents and promote financial stability and self-sufficiency. "Our goal is not just housing but building stability and creating moments of joy for our residents," Holcomb added. "Events like this show our families that they are valued and supported."
